Artist Cameron McIntyre Oil Painting Exhibit Opening: Saturday, November 1st from 6-8 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. Mr. McIntyre’s exhibit will hang at the museum through November.

4th Annual How Did Santa Claus Get Down a Twisted Chimney? Children’s Christmas Program with Abrakadoodle: (ages 5-12) Sunday, December 7th from 1-3:30. What a fun way to ring in the holidays! Kids, join us for festive Christmas art projects and enjoy stories and songs from Christmas’s past. The children will see an actual twisted chimney that is located in the historic almshouse attic. Holiday refreshments will be served. (Courtesy of Abrakadoodle, all proceeds from this event will go directly back to the Barrier Islands Center!) Cost: $20

BIC Speaker Series: Virginia State Folklorist Jon Lohman: “Traditional Music Styles of Virginia”: Thursday, January 15th at 5:30 p.m. There are a dizzying number of styles of traditional music in Virginia, ranging from the sea shanties of the Chesapeake watermen, to the old time and bluegrass stylings of the Blue Ridge. State Folklorist Jon Lohman will lead the audience on an audio-visual tour of some of the diverse ways in which communities of the Commonwealth are expressing themselves through music. Free.

Children’s Abrakadoodle Art Class: A Winter Wonderland:6 week session on Wednesdays from January 21st- February 25th. Mini Doodlers (3-5 yrs) 3:15-4:05 p.m. Cost: $70 per child. Doodlers (5-11 yrs. old) 4:05- 5:00 p.m. Cost: $75 per child. In this session, we’ll explore some highlights of the season with projects focusing on wintry delights. We’ll use a wide range of art media as we build snowmen in the meadow, play in icicle-covered forests, meet an atmospheric scientist/photographer and much more during this very cool art session. Come on in, pull off your mittens and boots, grab a cup of hot cocoa, and join us in creating art that will bring some warmth to this season.

BIC Speaker Series: Art Schwartzchild Director of University of Virginia LTER: “Climate Change and Sea Level Rise on the Eastern Shore of Virginia”: Wednesday, January 21st at 5:30 p.m. Art Schwartzchild will discuss what his research site is doing in monitoring sea levels, historic trends, and what this means for the Barrier Islands and the Eastern Shore. Free.

Rick and Janice Felker of Mattawoman Creek Farms: Thursday, February 5th at 5:30 p.m. The Felkers will discuss organic gardening and the process and benefits to community supported agriculture, as well as give us a peek as to what is growing down at the farm this upcoming season. Free.

BIC 3rd Annual Oyster Roast: Saturday, February 21st at 4 p.m. Tickets: $50 per person or $75 per couple. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, January 7th.

Floorcloth Making Workshop with Miriam Riggs: : Saturday, March 7th from 9:00- 1:00 p.m. Cost: $85 includes materials. This popular class is back! Participants will design and create their own floorcloth to take home. Have some fun while adding that personal touch to your house to be enjoyed for years to come.

Children’s Boating Safety Class with the U.S. Coast Guard (Saturday in April, date TBA): Calling all kids who love to be on the water in a boat! This introductory boat safety class is for every child 7-14 who loves to go boating and for every mom and dad who want their kids to know boat and water safety at an early age. In this hands-on 3 hour class, students will learn introductory boating safety skills to help lay the groundwork for years of boating fun!
